Research on Public Opinions and Attitudes (ROPOA)

Research on Public Opinions and Attitudes (ROPOA) was initiated in March 2021. The research collects cross-sectional as well as longitudinal data using multiple survey modes to explore people’s opinions of and attitudes towards different dimensions of life. By means of trend studies and panel data, the trajectories and transitions of people’s feelings in daily life across different time points can be revealed. The main themes of the questionnaires include individual well-being, use of social media, and contemporary issues.

While information on people’s social-demographic variables and individual well-being is collected regularly, contemporary issues may vary in response to important events in the society, such as the impact of COVID-19 and associated policies. In addition to survey data, data derived from social media and geographic information sciences can be incorporated to have a better understanding of people’s lives from a diverse yet comprehensive point of view.

An important task of ROPOA is to explore innovative issues in survey methodology, including but not limited to dual-frame telephone surveys, issues in using a probability-based web panel, and improvement of data quality and survey response rates.
