Survey approaches that take advantage of recent technology, particularly smartphones, hold great promise for improving survey measurement. However, they also introduce complexities in design and implementation. Methodological research is essential for navigating these issues and enabling innovations in survey design. In this talk, I will describe my work examining three newer survey approaches: questionnaires optimized for mobile devices, app-based surveys modularized into shorter parts, and in the-moment surveys triggered by geolocation data. Through these examples, I aim to highlight both the opportunities and challenges that mobile data collection methods present for social researchers.
