Introduction

.History.

The Center for Survey Research (CSR), formerly the Office of Survey Research that was founded in 1993 and reorganized in 2003, has been devoted to the integration of survey research resources with the object of improving the efficiency of survey work and promoting the adequate use of survey data. Missions::

1、To improve methods of data collection and measurement;
2、To foster international cooperation on survey research;
3、To introduce new concepts, alternative methods and new analytical perspectives on survey research;
4、To promote data sharing, data archiving, and the use of SRDA resources.

.Organization.

The CSR’s Executive Director coordinates both the administrative and the research and development affairs. In addition to the research faculty, the CSR is comprised of the Survey Division, which specializes in conducting surveys, and the Data Division, which has expertise in data curation. Several administrative and technical staff members provide support services and help promote academic research.

Consultation & Promotion

One important part of the CSR’s promotional activities relates to the consultation and training services that we have been offering for years. As a pioneer in survey research, and with more than a decade of extensive experience in survey implementation and data curation, the CSR provides a variety of services to facilitate educational and experiential opportunities in an effort to share experiences and assist researchers or undergraduate/graduate students in all aspects of survey operation.Consultation and promotion services provided by CSR include:

1、To improve methods of data collection and measurement;
2、To foster international cooperation on survey research;
3、To introduce new concepts, alternative methods and new analytical perspectives on survey research;
4、To promote data sharing, data archiving, and the use of SRDA resources.

Data Service

 Founded in 1994, the SRDA acquires, develops, preserves, and disseminates important survey research data in Taiwan. In terms of the number of datasets acquired-which is currently 1,500-as well as the variety of disciplines and survey approaches included, the SRDA ranks at the top in Taiwan and has become one of the leading archives in Asia. The number of newly-acquired datasets is expected to grow steadily.

  • Academic Survey Data
    The SRDA collects survey data from academic research in the areas of sociology, economics, political science, education, management, public health, regional studies, sports, and fine arts. Sources of data include (1) donations from scholars or institutions that have conducted public opinion polls, (2) research projects conducted by CSR, and (3) survey projects funded by the National Science Council
  • Government Survey Data
    Data from the government include surveys conducted by the following government units: (1) Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics; (2) The Ministry of the Interior; (3) The Bureau of Health Promotion, Department of Health; and (4) The Research, Development and Evaluation Commission.

The SRDA houses survey data in a wide spectrum of disciplines. Such resources can serve as valuable references for researchers, as research data for quantitative studies, or as teaching materials for class instruction in statistical analysis and research. Data services provided by CSR include data access and data preparation.      Individuals who are interested in becoming a member of SRDA can apply for the free membership. Members can search for relevant datasets and browse questionnaires, frequency tables, and reports online. A new feature on the SRDA website was launched in 2009 to enhance the capacity of exploring data through on-line recoding, computing and analyzing. Most datasets can be downloaded directly from the website, while some datasets have restricted access, as mandated by the data provider. Application for access to such restricted data needs to be made according to the terms stipulated.

Since donation is the main source of our survey data archive, we sincerely welcome any donation of academic survey research data. SRDA has been awarded the ISO 27001:2005 certification for its digital data storage and usages services from BSi Management Systems. The donors should first screen out confidential information pertaining to the respondents and obtain formal consent of data release from organizations holding intellectual property rights before donation.

Survey Service

The CSR provides researcher fellows with assistance in survey data collection as well as survey method consultation. Although the majority of the survey projects thus conducted are social science related, some are bioscience surveys. Survey services offered by CSR include:
1、Budget planning,
2、Sample design,
3、Recruitment and training of field staff,
4、Survey implementation and progress control,
5、Report preparation.

      We adopt a wide range of survey methods, such as in-person interviews, telephone surveys, web surveys, mail surveys, and focus group discussions to meet the needs of different types of research. In pursuit of high quality survey services, CSR has obtained certification approvals of ISO 9001:2008 in telephone survey by BSMI. The center is also equipped with the following high-tech survey facilities and equipment to continuously improve the quality and efficiency of our services.      Research fellows who are interested in the services need to submit an application with survey topic and design, subject matter, sample design and sample size, and budget plan for review three months prior to the beginning of survey operations.
